January 8, 2007

A small but lively group participated in the Seattle Editor’s Guild’s Jan. 8 “open forum” meeting, facilitated by Ann Gosch. After members introduced themselves, Marguerite Langlois got us off to a rousing start by sharing her enthusiasm and information about the Guild’s first all-day conference coming up on March 31 at North Seattle Community College. If you’ve already checked out the conference link on the Guild Web site, you know that Amy Einsohn, author of The Copyeditor’s Handbook, will be the keynote speaker.

For the next couple hours, attendees freely discussed and shared their experiences on a wide range of topics:

Freeware invoice software from the Web
Reference book recommendation: Small Business for Dummies
Transitioning into a new specialty
Potential source of new clients: Barnes & Noble–hosted get-togethers for new writers
Forming a cooperative as an alternative to self-publishing
Fact checking
Charging clients for travel time
What work breaks can be considered within billable hours
How to charge clients for a manuscript critique
How you got your greatest gig!
And more . . .

Please join the discussion the next time the Guild hosts an open forum meeting. It’s a great way to get your questions answered, along with questions you might not have even thought to ask.
