Logo design

There was general affirmation of the concept above, which was designed by Robin Stewart. The group agreed that we need to have a designer polish and refine it (ideally, quickly enough so that we can incorporate it into the rolodex business cards and brochure we plan to produce and distribute at Northwest Bookfest, November 13-14).

Sherri Schultz, the Guild’s coordinator, said she knew nothing about design, printing, etc., and voiced a fervent wish that Guild-member angels would step forward, take the design, and magically reappear with business cards and brochures in November.

Judith Dern and Judith Calman gamely volunteered to try to help make this happen; if you're interested in helping too (especially if you're a designer or have experience in producing printed materials), please contact info@edsguild.org. The Judiths will be overjoyed.

Sherri will e-mail the Guild’s members to see if there is a designer among us who is willing to help; if not, we’ll consider hiring an outside professional.

Brochure

The brochure drafted by Amy Smith Bell was approved, with various and sundry small editorial changes.

Mentoring

There was a short discussion of what role, if any, the Guild might play in mentoring people who are relatively new to the professions. Several ideas were raised:

Members should feel free to contact other members on their own, using the e-mail addresses in the Membership Directory

The Web site's Bulletin Board can be used by people seeking a mentor

Beginning next year, the Membership Directory will put an asterisk by the names of members who indicate, when they join/renew, that they are willing to receive phone calls or e-mails from newer editors.

One member said that she sometimes has occasion to subcontract for services (such as proofreading on a piece she has written), and sometimes that person is young and/or doesn't have a great deal of experience, so she works with them and tries to help "groom" them to be an editor one day.

—Sherri Schultz, notetaker
