Northwest Independent Editors Guild

Discount on Chicago Manual of Style Online!

We're excited to offer this benefit to Guild members: an 17% discount on the 16th edition of Chicago Manual of Style Online--a web-accessible, searchable version of the beloved manual.

Annual subscriptions to CMoS Online (normally $35.00) are available to Guild members for $29.00.

How does it work?

Members can opt into the CMoS subscription while paying for renewal or when they join. We accept both checks and PayPal payments. Visit the subscription page to sign up!

Members who join the CMoS subscription group need to supply their name and an email address at the time of payment. That email address will be used by University of Chicago Press to send subscribers a link to set up their personal password for access to the manual online.

Subscriptions are annual and will start February 1, 2012. The whole group subscription expires at the same time on January 31, 2013. Those who want to continue their subscription after that can opt into the Guild's group subscription during membership renewal next year.

FAQ

Can I join the subscription group after the Guild renewal period or at other times during the year?
Yes, but the rate for the subscription remains unchanged and the subscription will still expire (unless you renew it) on the last day of January of the following year. In other words, the fee for joining the subscription group cannot be prorated.

I already own the book. What are the advantages of joining the group subscription?
The 16th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style was released in 2010, and it contains a number of pertinent changes from earlier editions. A summary of the changes can be found on their website.

The Chicago Manual of Style Online offers

fast, easy searching of both the manual's content and the Chicago Style Q&A
web access to the manual--use your account wherever you have internet access
features to customize your manual, such as electronic notes, bookmarks, and project-specific style sheets
a simple way to email CMoS citations to colleagues or clients

What if I already have an individual subscription? Can I transfer my current subscription?
The rate we offer through the Guild group subscription locks everyone into the same subscription cycle and the same cost; those who are already subscribers will need to consider whether it is cost-effective to join the group subscription this year. The Guild will offer a discount again next year, so current subscribers can plan to join at that time, if they like. Our CMoS subscription cycle will always begin on February 1 (so we can tie it to the Guild renewal process each year); you can plan ahead for next year with that date in mind.

I see that the University of Chicago Press offers deeper discounts for larger groups and for two-year subscriptions. Why isn't the Guild offering those?
We are still in the process of determining how popular this benefit is among Guild members, which makes it difficult to estimate our costs. As we get a better sense of the size of the group, how much interest there is in the two-year subscriptions, and the logistics of setting up multiyear subscription options, we'll be able to determine optimal choices for the Guild's discount program next year. So, stay tuned!

If you have a strong interest in subscribing next year but aren't able to this year, would like to join a two-year subscription group next year, or have suggestions about the program, please email me at info@edsguild.org. Your information and suggestions will help us plan for next year.
