Report on the Conference

The first conference of the Northwest Independent Editors Guild was held in the comfortable facilities of North Seattle Community College. One hundred forty editors attended. They were freelance and staff, Guild members and non, from far-flung and close-by places like Bellingham, Port Townsend, Redmond, Kent, Olympia, Portland/Vancouver, and Seattle.

Attendees enjoyed:

a welcome by Guild co-founder Sherri Schultz;
a keynote address on career development by Amy Einsohn, author of The Copyeditor’s Handbook;
sessions by noted editors and Guild members:

Kathy Bradley
Beth Chapple
Kris Fulsaas
Ann Gosch
Phyllis Hatfield
Niquette Kelcher
Rosanna Mattingly
Karalynn Ott
Barbara Sjoholm
Jon Stahl
Julie Van Pelt

discussion sessions moderated by experienced editors: Amy Smith Bell, Nancy Burkhalter, Janet Epstein, Waverly Fitzgerald, Brie Gyncild, Susan Hodges, June Ireland, Priscilla Long, Paula Rudberg Lowe, Debby Nagusky, and Andrea Ptak;
a space to meet and network with other editors, peruse the Editors Showcase, participate in a fun lunchtime spelling bee, and browse word-related books at the University Bookstore’s table; and
a celebration of NWIEG’s 10th anniversary that included a cake in the shape of the Chicago Manual of Style and special gifts presented to the Guild co-founders, Sherri Schultz and Phyllis Hatfield, by the Steering Committee.

The Guild received numerous positive responses to the conference, and 85% of post-conference evaluations indicated people would "definitely" come to the next one.

Some comments:

"Presenters smart, enthusiastic, engaging."
"Thanks for 'out of the box' session."
"Liked stories of actual clients, good way to learn."
"Much more than I thought it would be, lots of info."

What people particularly liked:

"The variety of topics."
"Discussions."
"Excellent advice in all workshops."
"Meeting, contacts, trading job suggestions…"

What people want more of at the next conference:

"More of same! couldn't attend all sessions!"
More networking, technical, advanced, "hands on," specialized, basics, and business sessions.
More small sessions, breakout sessions, and outside experts.
More hot water for tea!

Special thanks to our volunteers who helped produce the Guild's first conference: Justine Banas, Patti Bezzo, Allana Joy Bourne, Nancy Burkhalter, Rick Chan, Linda Clifton, Janet Epstein, Robyn Fritz, Ann Gosch, Colleen Haiber, Randy Hilfman, Liz McGehee, Anne Moreau, Dan Murphy, Jason Petz, Helen Schinske, Suzanne Schmalzer, Sherri Schultz, Marianne Streich, Barrie Trinkle, Martha Wagner, and Julie Zander
