Editing with Disability/Illness/Neurodivergence (Morning)

This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors.

Group agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:

* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.

* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.

* We take care of ourselves. Stretch, eat, drink, take a break, etc.

* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.

* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes, stories stay.

Discussion topics for this online chat are currently open. If you have a conversation topic you would like to host (for this meeting or at a different day/time), please contact me! I also have a list of topics to bring to the meeting in case they are needed.

The Basics of Sensitivity Reading - Editor Edition, with Brittany Yost

The Basics of Sensitivity Reading - Editor Edition, with Brittany Yost

Sensitivity reading is a service that’s evolved significantly over the past 5 years and is still growing. In this session, we’ll take a quick look at how the practice has developed, where it stands presently (including the effects of the ongoing pushback around DEI), and what best practices are coming to the forefront. Our presenter, Brittany Yost, will cover how to speak with authors about needing a sensitivity reader, how to approach a sensitivity reader, and what pitfalls to avoid through both the freelance and acquisition editor's perspective.

Brittany Yost received an MA in Publishing Studies from University College London with an emphasis in diverse manuscript acquisitions. She has served on two separate professional diversity committees and has been leading inclusivity and bias training seminars since 2010. She has been a sensitivity and authenticity reader for Writing in the Margins, Write Up, and Wiley and interned and worked on the commissioning team for Unbound Publishing in the UK. She has over 10 years of experience as a freelance developmental editor.

This event is free to attend and open to all editors, guests, and/or members of related fields. It will be recorded.

Editors of Color Coffee Hour

Editors of Color Coffee Hour

Are you an Editor of Color? Would you like to meet up with your fellow Editors of Color in a welcoming, intimate, online setting?

Jesi Vega, recent president of the Northwest Editors Guild and a Puerto Rican Jew from the Bronx, hosts a monthly Zoom coffee hour for editors who identify as Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color (BIPOC, bitches!)

During this virtual coffee hour—open to both Guild members and non-members—we will share experiences, explore the possibilities of a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable editing profession, get to know each other better and, likely, laugh a lot.

Please spread the word to any Editors of Color you know. This is a rare opportunity to build community for our underrepresented group and we want to spread the word. If you have any questions, please email info@edsguild.org to be put in touch with the host.

Editors Helping Editors

Editors Helping Editors

Join us for our "Editors Helping Editors" meeting. Bring your problems, big and small, as well as your thinking caps. We'll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn't working in Word. The only topic that's off limits is setting rates, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics, such as tools and data we use when setting rates, what counts as a tax write-off, and how/when to raise rates.

This event is open to all editors, and will not be recorded.

Please note that Editors Helping Editors will take a summer break in July, then return in August with a topicless EHE: just an open question session where anyone can ask anything. In September, we will do project management software.

Sharpen Your Editing Skills by Studying Fiction with Kristen Tate

Experienced fiction editor Kristen Tate will share the concepts and strategies she developed while writing her book Novel Study: Decoding the Secrets and Structures of Contemporary Fiction. At the story level, she’ll show how tools like intensity mapping and tracking story questions can help you diagnose plot problems and identify where a manuscript needs more juice. At the scene level, she’ll explain how breaking down scene components can help you identify why a scene isn’t working. And at the sentence level, she’ll share examples of when authors successfully break writing “rules”—like using passive voice or filter words—and how to recognize these as deliberate craft choices. Finally, she’ll demonstrate how to build your own Novel Study toolkit to sharpen your editorial instincts and better support the authors you work with.

Submit questions for this event here. Questions must be submitted by the Friday before the event!

Kristen Tate has been a freelance book editor for a decade, with hundreds of books under her belt. She has a PhD in English from Columbia University, with a focus on novels and publishing history. She has been thinking about how novels work and how readers experience them for many years and brings this rich experience to her editing. An internship at Chronicle Books, intensive developmental editing courses through the Editorial Freelancers Association, and a Professional Editing Certificate from University of California at Berkeley ensure that the advice you receive is accurate, reliable, and up-to-date.

Kristen serves on the board of directors of The Editorial Freelancers Association and Writeability. She appears frequently as a speaker at writing conferences and on writing-related podcasts.

This event is free to attend and open to all editors, guests, and/or members of related fields. It will be recorded.

Board Recruitment Happy Hour September 19

The Northwest Editors Guild is led by a volunteer board of directors. Every year, editors just like you give freely of their time to keep the Guild running for all of us… and we need volunteers who will help the Guild move into 2025 and beyond!

Interested in serving on the Guild’s board but not sure what it entails? Current and past board members will be holding board recruitment events throughout September and October so that you can learn more about board service.

Join us for these informal events on any of the following dates:

September 17, 4–5pm
September 19, 5–6pm
October 8, 5:30–6:30pm
October 22, 5pm–6pm
October 23, 3pm–4pm

You can also attend our open October board meeting on Monday, October 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. PT to see how board service really works!

If none of the above dates works for you and you have questions that our board service FAQ doesn’t answer or just want to talk more about the requirements of board service, please email info@edsguild.org.

Please join for an informal, virtual gathering, where we can converse about volunteer service for the board.

This event is open only to members, and will not be recorded.

Word Games Chat

Get wordy with a Word Games Chat!

Your veteran Capitol Hill Coffee Hour hosts, Dana A and Roberta K, would love to play word games with you online on Monday, October 2, noon to 1 p.m. PT. This event is free, and open only to Guild members.

This time, we’ll be playing collaborative crosswords using the in-browser Planet Crossword game on the hovercats.gg website (we might try other games in the future). Feel free to check out the website beforehand (go to https://hovercats.gg/about to watch a video), but you can easily join in on the day with a link we’ll provide during the chat.

Note: You will need a computer to participate. The crossword app won’t work well on a phone.

You play crosswords as a cat in space, and chat while you play. What’s not to love?

If you have any questions about this event please email Dana A at dana@lastpassediting.com

September Member Meeting: The Spooky Side of Editing

In the spirit of many retail stores that are displaying Halloween items already (and because we don't have an October member meeting), let’s talk about the creepy side of editing and share a few scary stories! Join us for a discussion of the worst typos and misspellings, the scariest unintended meanings, and the wildest awkward phrasings that you’ve ever run into as an editor. We look forward to seeing you there!

This event is open to all editors and will not be recorded.
