Editors of Color Coffee Hour

Editors of Color Coffee Hour

Are you an Editor of Color? Would you like to meet up with your fellow Editors of Color in a welcoming, intimate, online setting?

Jesi Vega, recent president of the Northwest Editors Guild and a Puerto Rican Jew from the Bronx, hosts a monthly Zoom coffee hour for editors who identify as Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color (BIPOC, bitches!)

During this virtual coffee hour—open to both Guild members and non-members—we will share experiences, explore the possibilities of a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable editing profession, get to know each other better and, likely, laugh a lot.

Please spread the word to any Editors of Color you know. This is a rare opportunity to build community for our underrepresented group and we want to spread the word. If you have any questions, please email info@edsguild.org to be put in touch with the host.

Northwest Editors Guild is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Editors Helping Editors

Editors Helping Editors

Join us for our first "Editors Helping Editors" meeting. Bring your problems, big and small, as well as your thinking caps. We'll work together to solve event-goers quandaries and questions, which could range from common questions like how to find clients in a particular field (say academic editing) to more situation-specific issues like why a particular macro isn't working in Word. The only topic that's off limits is setting rates, as that can be seen as price-fixing. However, we can talk about rate-adjacent topics, such as tools and data we use when setting rates, what counts as a tax write-off, and how/when to raise rates.

This event is open to all editors, and will not be recorded.

Editing with Disability/Illness/Neurodivergence (Afternoon)

This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors.

Group agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:

* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.

* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.

* We take care of ourselves. Stretch, eat, drink, take a break, etc.

* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.

* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes, stories stay.

Topics for the online chat this Monday are currently open. If you have a conversation topic you would like to host (for this meeting or at a different day/time), please contact me! I also have a list of topics to bring to the meeting in case they are needed.

AI for Editors: An Introduction to the Future of Editing

Editors need to lean into the AI revolution and learn how to use AI tools like ChatGPT so they can edit faster and better and have job security in an increasingly AI-enhanced workforce. Think of ChatGPT as your assistant that can automate the tedious parts of your job so it becomes less about catching mistakes and more about fine-tuning the content. You can integrate AI tools into your existing copyediting workflow to supercharge your efficiency and improve your accuracy. ChatGPT can help with content editing, too, by offering suggestions and even writing your editorial reports and client communications. In the end, it means less grunt work, faster turnaround times, higher-quality projects, and happier clients and bosses.

In this session with Erin Servais, we’ll:

* cover the fundamentals of what ChatGPT is and how it works
* explore AI functionalities in an editorial workflow
* forecast AI’s effect on the editing industry.

March Member Meeting

March Member Meeting

Join us at 6:30 p.m. PT on Monday, March 18, for our March member meeting: The Mainstreaming of Antisemitism in America with Bob Horenstein.

A recent survey of American adults revealed that over one-third did not know what antisemitism is, and one out of six said they had never heard of the word. This at a time when we are seeing an alarming rise in antisemitic incidents and hate crimes in the U.S. Education about antisemitism is therefore essential. This workshop will explore what antisemitism is (and what it is not), how it has evolved over time, and how it is being normalized in America. It will dispel misconceptions about Jewish identity and also delve into the reasons why antisemitism is often overlooked or even dismissed by those working in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Bob Horenstein has served as Director of Community Relations of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland since 1994. In this role, Horenstein has directed the Federation’s efforts to safeguard the social safety net, promote civil rights, and combat hate and bigotry. He is also a freelance writer.

This event is free and open to all editors. To receive the Zoom information required to attend this meeting, please register for free at the event page, or (members only) go to this page. If you have any questions, please email info@edsguild.org.

Making Your Business Accessible with Mary-Colleen Jenkins

Many freelance editors create multifaceted businesses that delve into teaching, coaching, and writing as well as straight editing. And we create business materials—websites, newsletters, social media posts, presentations—to share our brand and hopefully generate business. But do we know how to create these business assets so they are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities?

There are so many resources out there to help us build a business or a branding/marketing strategy, but few of these resources talk about accessibility. Our presenter, Mary-Colleen Jenkins, will define accessibility and offer a starting point for building accessible practices and design into your small business content. We'll cover some easy best practices to start employing now, and share resources for further exploration.

Mary-Colleen Jenkins is an Instruction Accessibility Specialist on IT-Accessible Technologies team at the University of Washington (UW). Mary-Colleen’s area of focus is outreach and faculty development, so her role is about supporting faculty in making their course materials, especially digital content, accessible to students with disabilities. The philosophy behind her work is “Progress over Perfection.” Each step forward is an important step forward.

Prior to her current role, Mary-Colleen followed a career path that is familiar to many members of the Guild: Teaching, Editing, and Consulting. She has taught in several programs at the University of Washington, including the Engineering Communication Program (2014-2022), the Editing Certificate Program (2017-2020), the Technical Writing and Editing Certificate Program (2011-2013). Mary-Colleen also served on the Guild board from 2012 to 2014.

This event is free to attend and open to all editors.

Word Games Chat

Get wordy with a Word Games Chat!

Your veteran Capitol Hill Coffee Hour hosts, Dana A and Roberta K, would love to play word games with you online on Monday, October 2, noon to 1 p.m. PT. This event is free, and open only to Guild members.

This time, we’ll be playing collaborative crosswords using the in-browser Planet Crossword game on the hovercats.gg website (we might try other games in the future). Feel free to check out the website beforehand (go to https://hovercats.gg/about to watch a video), but you can easily join in on the day with a link we’ll provide during the chat.

Note: You will need a computer to participate. The crossword app won’t work well on a phone.

You play crosswords as a cat in space, and chat while you play. What’s not to love?

If you have any questions about this event please email Dana A at dana@lastpassediting.com

The Mentee Experience—A Panel Discussion

The Northwest Editors Guild’s Mentoring Program is a popular Guild benefit. It supports new editors just getting started as well as mid-career editors looking to pivot to a new niche. In the past year alone, 19 mentor-mentee pairs were matched through the program.

Maybe you also have considered applying to the program, and wondered what the experience would be like?

Join us for a panel discussion with three program alumni to hear about the mentoring experience from the mentee perspective.

All Guild members are welcome—and encouraged—to attend.

There will be a Q&A session following the discussion, so be sure to bring all your questions about participating in the mentoring program for our panelists to respond to.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

This event is open to members only and will not be recorded.

If you have any questions about this event, please email mentoring@edsguild.org.

Mentoring: The Right Stuff … What Is It? — A Panel Discussion

The Northwest Editors Guild’s Mentoring Program is a popular Guild benefit. It supports new editors just getting started as well as mid-career editors looking to pivot to a new niche. In the past year alone, 19 mentor-mentee pairs were matched through the program. Amazingly, this effective program operates 100% with volunteer mentors.

The program is always accepting new mentors, and editors considering volunteering as a mentor often ask, “What does it take to be a mentor? Do I have the right stuff?” These are good questions. Join us on Monday, July 24, from noon to 1:30 p.m., for a panel discussion with four experienced mentors from the program to find out the answers!

All Guild members are welcome—and encouraged—to attend. The panelists will share information beneficial to both future and current mentors. There will be a Q&A session following the discussion, so be sure to bring all your questions about being a mentor for our intrepid panelists to answer.

This event is open to members only and will not be recorded.

March Member Meeting

Have you bought a piece of clothing from a store, and, when you took it to the cashier, had the person checking you out say, "this color will look great on you!" This is a sales strategy, a subtle but still manipulative attempt to build brand loyalty—it's a way for the retailer to assure you that you made a good decision when you chose to buy with them.

How might freelance editors use similar strategies in our own business? What are our options for applying sales psychology ethically, without manipulating our clients? In this short presentation, Letitia Henville will describe how she captures and shares quantifiable measures of the difference her editing makes with her clients. As a group, we'll then discuss other freelance-appropriate sales strategies, as well as the ethics of applying tricks from consumer psychology and behavioral insights to our business practices.

Letitia Henville (she/her), PhD, is an award-winning instructor and editor who helps researchers to articulate their goals to an audience of their peers. She lives and works on the unceded, stolen territory of the Səl̓ílwətaʔ and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm people on the land now called the Dunbar region in Vancouver. She writes the monthly advice column “Ask Dr. Editor” for University Affairs, and can be found online at shortishard.com and writingwellishard.com.

This event is free and open to all editors.

Continuing the Conscious Language Conversation

Our recent conscious language member meeting featured Alex Kapitan’s presentation Conscious Language and the Power of Words. That evening’s rich discussion inspired us to create some time and space to continue the conversation.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 19th, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. PT to dig a little deeper into the ways conscious language impacts our lives as editors. We’ll bring the discussion topics, you bring your unique perspectives. To best create a safe conversational space, this will be closed to Guild members only, and will not be recorded.

Let us know at info@edsguild.org if you have any questions, and we look forward to seeing you on October 19th!

Online Coffee Chat for Editors with Disabilities and/or Chronic Illness

Online Coffee Chat for Editors with Disabilities and/or Chronic Illness

This Friday online coffee chat will be a purely social event. Anyone who works as an editor and lives with disability and/or chronic illness is invited. This event is partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). Although there will be no set agenda, the host, Kyra Freestar, does have the following ulterior motives: (1) to find out how many people are interested in this conversation, (2) to learn from each other, and (3) to start making a list of topics that editors with disability or chronic illness would like to hear or to share with others at future Guild events or conferences.

A few notes: We will respect everyone's experience, and nobody has to explain their experience. We will share no names or personal stories outside of the chat.

A request: Kyra would like to hear from you if you are unable to attend this event, for any reason, but would be interested in future events. She would like to hear from you if you might be interested in helping to organize or host future events. And she is available for any questions. Please contact the host directly at kyra@bridgecreekediting.com.

This event is free to attend and open to all editors.

How to Be a Happy Worker: A Workshop by Jenny MacLeod

The Programming Committee is delighted to offer a new workshop from Jenny MacLeod. Some of you may remember her presentation last year on IRS taxes for self-employed folks. Or perhaps you saw her presentation at the last Red Pencil conference. Although Jenny does charge for workshops and for one-on-one coaching, this workshop is free to all Guild members as a perk of membership. Please register by Wednesday, September 7th. We hope that this friendly and down-to-earth workshop and all the discussion it sparks will help you find the work/life balance you crave!

How to Be a Happy Worker: A Workshop by Jenny MacLeod

For many of us, when we choose to be self-employed, we’re doing it for two major reasons: we want to do meaningful work, and we want to be happier – both on the job and in life. Sadly and strangely, it’s common to find ourselves in a new daily grind or on a hamster wheel of our own making – working all the time, stressed, not earning enough, barely surviving, not thriving. Not happy at work. Or life. It turns out that being happy rarely happens by accident. It takes effort, knowledge, and skill. It starts by our deciding to be a great self-manager and then learning and applying some principles and new habits. In this workshop, we first look at the big picture: what gets in the way/roadblocks, some foundational ideas and guiding principles. And then we’ll highlight a few specific Happy Worker Skills to start incorporating into your routines. The Goal: to commit to being the best boss ever – with a new perspective and new actions to take to make some changes and feel relief right away.

Jenny MacLeod, aka Jenny Girl Friday, is a coach, writer, and speaker. She has been supporting self-employed womxn* in Seattle for nearly 10 years, providing organic business coaching, classes, and workshops for being happy at work, friendly tax education, online resources and tools, and help with business chores via Sidekick Services. She is passionate about helping women thrive in self-employment! A big part of this is learning to be a great self-manager . . . so one can enjoy their job, stay in the game, and do more of the work they love.

Learn more at jennygirlfriday.com or check out seattlebusinessapothecary.com

Find her book, How to Become Self-Employed in Seattle: A Guidebook, Companion, and Resource, at Amazon, local stores, or the library.

*Crafted for womxn, open for every body.

Workshop handouts will be available starting Thursday morning on this page: http://www.jennygirlfriday.com/nweg
